This layered lasagna al Bolognese features rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and tender pasta, finished with a broiled mozzarella top and extra creamy tomato sauce. Cozy, indulgent, and worth every bite.

Perfect for an At-Home Date Night

This lasagna feels indulgent and special without being intimidating to make. It’s the kind of dish you cook once, pour a glass of wine, and let the oven do the work—rich, cozy, and impressive enough to feel like a restaurant meal at home.

Finished with a Creamy Béchamel

The béchamel adds that classic, luxurious layer that sets this lasagna apart. It softens the pasta, balances the bold bolognese, and creates those silky, melt-in-your-mouth layers that make every bite feel intentional and elevated.

Restaurant-Quality Results

From the slow-simmered meat sauce to the broiled mozzarella finish, this lasagna delivers depth, balance, and presentation you’d expect from a great Italian spot. The final plated step with extra sauce takes it from homemade to chef-level.

Make the Ragù Bolognese

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add minced garlic, diced shallots, and carrots, cooking until softened and fragrant. Add Italian sausage and ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks, and brown fully. Pour in milk and white wine, one at a time, stirring until evaporated. Add crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, and season with salt, black pepper, and cinnamon. Stir well, lower heat, and simmer until rich, thick, and deeply flavored. Set aside.

Make the Béchamel Sauce

Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook briefly to remove the raw flour taste. Slowly pour in warm milk while whisking continuously until smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, and cinnamon if using. Cook until thick and creamy, then remove from heat.

Prep the Lasagne Sheets

Bring a pot of hot water to a gentle boil. Submerge oven-ready lasagne sheets briefly to loosen them, then remove and drain. This helps prevent cracking and ensures even layering.

Assemble the Lasagna

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a baking dish. Start with a layer of lasagne sheets, followed by ragù bolognese, then béchamel, and a sprinkle of Parmesan. Repeat the layers, finishing with a top layer of lasagne.

Bake

Cover tightly with foil and bake until hot, bubbly, and fully set. Remove from the oven and allow the lasagna to rest so it firms up and slices cleanly.

Make the Creamy Tomato Sauce

In a small saucepan, combine crushed tomatoes, heavy cream, Parmesan, salt, and black pepper. Warm gently until smooth and slightly thickened. Set aside for serving.

Finish & Broil

Cut a portion of lasagna and place it in an oven-safe pan. Spoon creamy tomato sauce over the top, add fresh mozzarella, and broil until the cheese is bubbly and lightly browned.

This lasagna is the kind of dish that instantly turns an ordinary night at home into a true date night experience. It has all the elements of a restaurant-quality meal—slow-simmered bolognese, creamy béchamel, tender layers of pasta, and a rich, cheesy finish—but without the pressure or noise of dining out. It’s comforting, elevated, and meant to be shared, which makes it perfect for setting the tone of a cozy, intentional evening at home.

What really makes this recipe shine for date night is that it can be turned into a complete dinner with very little extra effort. The lasagna itself is hearty and satisfying, so all it needs alongside it is something simple and fresh, like a crisp green salad, roasted vegetables, or warm garlic bread. You can prep most of it ahead of time, pour a glass of wine while it bakes, and actually enjoy the night instead of standing in the kitchen the entire time.

Serving it the final way—broiled with fresh mozzarella and extra sauce—adds that polished, restaurant-style touch that makes the meal feel special. It’s impressive without being overcomplicated, which is exactly what an at-home date night should be.
