Cheesy Baked Ravioli

  • 18 oz ravioli I used 3-cheese, but you can use whatever you prefer
  • pasta sauce recipe below
  • 1 lb mozzarella cheese shredded
Pasta Sauce
  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage
  • 56 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1/3 cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 5 garlic cloves minced
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • 0.2 oz fresh basil chopped
  • 3 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Method
 

Preheat the oven
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
Sauté the aromatics
  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add diced shallots and minced garlic.
  3. Sauté until soft, translucent, and fragrant, about 1 minute.
Brown the sausage
  1. Add Italian sausage to the skillet.
  2. Cook, breaking it up, until browned and cooked through.
Build the pasta sauce
  1. Stir in crushed tomatoes, parsley, basil, sugar, oregano, black pepper, and salt.
  2. Simmer uncovered 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
Prepare the baking dish
  1. Lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
Layer the ravioli
  1. Add a single layer of ravioli over the sauce.
  2. Top with more meat sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
  3. Repeat layers, finishing with sauce and cheese on top.
Bake
  1. Cover loosely with foil and bake 25–30 minutes, until bubbly and heated through.
Broil
  1. Remove foil and broil 2–4 minutes, watching closely, until cheese is golden and lightly browned.
Rest & serve
  1. Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
