Method
Preheat the oven
- Preheat oven to 375°F.
Sauté the aromatics
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add diced shallots and minced garlic.
- Sauté until soft, translucent, and fragrant, about 1 minute.
Brown the sausage
- Add Italian sausage to the skillet.
- Cook, breaking it up, until browned and cooked through.
Build the pasta sauce
- Stir in crushed tomatoes, parsley, basil, sugar, oregano, black pepper, and salt.
- Simmer uncovered 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
Prepare the baking dish
- Lightly grease a baking dish.
- Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
Layer the ravioli
- Add a single layer of ravioli over the sauce.
- Top with more meat sauce and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
- Repeat layers, finishing with sauce and cheese on top.
Bake
- Cover loosely with foil and bake 25–30 minutes, until bubbly and heated through.
Broil
- Remove foil and broil 2–4 minutes, watching closely, until cheese is golden and lightly browned.
Rest & serve
- Let rest 5 minutes before serving.
